The New York Knicks appear to be celebrating on multiple fronts.
Prior to the team’s championship run this postseason, team president James Dolan delivered a playful admonition to the roster, suggesting that players limit their personal distractions during the playoffs, according to SNY’s Ian Begley.
In the unexpected address, Dolan—who has helmed the franchise since 1999—emphasized the significance of sacrifice and expressed unwavering confidence in the squad’s ability to finally end the franchise’s 53‑year title drought.
A source told SNY, “They were a little surprised, but the words hit.”
More than two months later, Dolan and the Knicks achieved the championship they had long coveted when they defeated the Spurs in Game 5 on Saturday night.
Dolan stood center stage during the victory celebrations, receiving the Larry O’Brien trophy from commissioner Adam Silver and offering an apology to fans for the team’s previous struggles.
“Hey, New York, I’m sorry it took so long, but here we are, and hopefully it won’t take that long again,” Dolan said.
Dolan also interrupted Josh Hart’s post‑game press conference to urge New Yorkers to celebrate responsibly during the city’s festivities.
The advice was not fully followed, as the post‑championship celebrations saw 63 arrests, four stabbings, and one shooting incident.
The Knicks will aim for a parade on Thursday that proceeds without incident.
