Floyd Schofield is poised for a WBA lightweight world title bout against Gervonta Davis, and veteran three‑division champion James Toney has weighed in on the anticipated matchup.
Although Davis has been sidelined for 15 months due to external issues, his return appears imminent, and the WBA has mandated a showdown between the reigning champion and top contender Floyd Schofield for the lightweight championship.
Consequently, ‘Tank’ — currently listed as the WBA’s ‘champion‑in‑recess’ — can restore his full lightweight title status by agreeing to face ‘Kid Austin’ upon his return; otherwise, he will relinquish the championship.
“That kid is not ready. He will get knocked out.”
“[I see] nothing [in Floyd Schofield]. He is a good fighter for the lesser fighters, but when he steps up to Tank’s level, it will be something different. He will be like Frank Martin.”
Tank’s comeback is slated for September, and 23‑year‑old Schofield, who has been inactive since 2024 and fought only one round, aims to hand Davis his first professional defeat and become boxing’s third‑youngest male world champion.
