Jammu & Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi is being considered for a short stint in English county cricket as part of India’s preparations for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. The BCCI is exploring this option as an alternative to an immediate return to domestic duty.
Nabi was included in India’s Test squad for the recent series against Sri Lanka but did not play. Instead of sending him straight back to Indian domestic cricket, selectors reportedly want to expose him to the seamer‑friendly conditions of the County Championship’s closing rounds.
The proposal carries added weight because Nabi has been one of India’s standout red‑ball bowlers over the last two Ranji Trophy seasons. He claimed 60 wickets in the 2025‑26 Ranji Trophy, averaging just 12.56, and was instrumental in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic first Ranji title.
His haul included seven five‑wicket innings and a best‑in‑show figure of 7/24, underscoring his consistency. Nabi also maintained his momentum in the knockout phase, taking five wickets in the final against Karnataka.
The BCCI is reportedly in talks with English counties for a brief first‑class assignment, with Surrey among the clubs linked to the pacer. The aim is to give Nabi two or three county matches before India’s New Zealand tour, where his new‑ball swing could prove valuable.
Should the county arrangement fall through, Nabi is set to resume India A duties, including matches against Australia in Puducherry and the Irani Cup, which will provide further chances to impress.
Having taken 104 wickets across the last two Ranji campaigns, Nabi has established himself as a key prospect for international cricket. A county stint could further boost his prospects of breaking into the national side for the New Zealand series.
