Japan’s top currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, reaffirmed on Thursday that the authorities remain prepared to act in the foreign exchange market, as Tokyo continues to monitor currency movements closely.
“We continue to stand ready on forex,” Mimura said, according to Reuters. When asked whether officials had conducted rate checks with market participants—a step that can precede intervention—he declined to comment.
Mimura also expressed caution about current market conditions, stating he is “neither at ease nor satisfied” with the situation.
These remarks keep the prospect of Japanese currency intervention under consideration, though they do not confirm any immediate actions.
Market reaction
The Japanese yen showed limited reaction to the comments. USD/JPY was trading around 156.55 at the time of writing, down 1.36% on the day.
