In an interview with The Telegraph, Gillespie confirmed the PCB continues to owe him thousands of dollars in unpaid remuneration, nearly two years after his dismissal as Pakistan’s Test head coach in December 2024 — a role that lasted less than a year. He framed the unpaid wages not as a grievance to pursue but as proof that honesty came at a steeper price than he anticipated.

Gillespie Claims He Was Systematically Sidelined by Pakistan Cricket Authorities

Beyond the financial dispute, Gillespie makes a sharper allegation about power. He says he was hired with a clear mandate to revive Pakistan’s fast-bowling culture — pitches offering bounce and carry where pace bowlers could thrive. He was initially enthusiastic about the role. Then, he claims, the appointment of former fast bowler Aaqib Javed as a selector fundamentally altered his position. What began as overseeing the Test side, its players, staff, and selection input gradually narrowed, until he had no say in anything at all.

Gillespie was unsparing in describing the toll. “I was totally disrespected and undermined, and I direct that towards Aaqib Javed,” he said, adding that the fallout left him mentally affected, doubting himself, and questioning whether he wanted to remain in coaching.

What bothers Gillespie most isn’t the past — it’s the present. Javed remains chairman of selectors, and Gillespie objects to Javed citing both him and Gary Kirsten as reasons for Pakistan’s struggles, despite both having left the setup nearly two years ago. Gillespie’s rebuttal is blunt: if performance is the benchmark Javed wants to be judged by, Pakistan has actually dropped in the rankings across all three formats during his chairmanship — not improved, as Javed claims.

It arrives as the PCB launches an internal enquiry into a Test series collapse against England — back-to-back losses that triggered wholesale changes to the squad and management structure.
