Jay-Z Delivers Scathing Disses at Roots Picnic Comeback Performance]
Jay-Z made a rare solo festival appearance on Saturday night (May 30), delivering a career-spanning set that included pointed barbs at several former collaborators and peers.
The hip-hop legend performed a 35-song showcase at Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau as part of The Roots’ annual Roots Picnic event, bringing out special guests including Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, Peedi Crakk, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Meek Mill, and Young Gunz throughout the show.
The performance marked Jay-Z’s first festival appearance in seven years, though the evening drew significant attention for the harsh disses he delivered during his opening freestyle. In the pointed verses, the Roc-A-Fella founder targeted not only Drake and Kanye West (now known as Ye), but also Nicki Minaj, his former business partner Damon ‘Dame’ Dash, and Tory Lanez.
Regarding Minaj, Jay-Z referenced her recent alignment with Republican politicians as well as domestic violence allegations against her husband, Kenneth Petty. “That lady back on the stuff, she sound like she in love with him/ Her Ken can’t even pick they kids, enough of them,” he rapped, adding “A rapper can’t be my opp, I got MAGA republicans.”

Jay-Z sent shots at YE during his new freestyle
“You ever heard of wonder-kin? My children are some of them, Have you n*ggas have no shame? You really wanna get under my skin? I’ll really get under ya skin(stab), ask Un how I’m playing”

The rapper also addressed Drake’s recent diss track “The Jig Is Up,” responding with, “My next update, the jig is up/ N*gga, I’m up ten/ Wrong chart, champ, you gotta look up again/ N*ggas look up to Hov, I never looked up to them.”
In his verses targeting Ye, Jay-Z appeared to reference the controversial rapper’s public comments about their children and mental state. “You ever heard of wonder-kin? / My children is some of them, have you n**** no shame?” he asked, later adding, “Y’all thugs with y’all thumb again / Everybody thinks they’re the ones insane / You’re no maniac, watch how he sane he acts in my presence.”
He also appeared to reference Ye’s recent social media apology, with lines suggesting a continued distrust between the two.

The high-profile performance came as Jay-Z recently expressed skepticism about the role of rap battles in contemporary culture during an interview with GQ, stating he wasn’t sure “if battling needs to be a part of the culture anymore.” His performance directly contradicted those comments, particularly given the intense nature of his freestyle remarks.
The Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake feud that dominated 2024 and 2025 influenced much of the rap landscape during this period, with Jay-Z’s business interests through Roc Nation playing a role in Super Bowl halftime show selections. Lamar’s 2025 performance featured audience singalongs of the contentious “Not Like Us.”
In his GQ interview, Jay-Z also commented on the broader implications of modern rap feuds, noting, “Now, people that like Kendrick hate Drake, no matter what he makes. It’s like an attack on his character… I don’t like that. I sound like the old guy wagging his finger, but I think we can achieve the same thing, as far as sparring with music, with collaborations more so than breaking the whole thing apart.”
He continued, “It could stand it before because there was no social media. You had the battle and it was fun and then you moved on. Right now, I don’t know if it could stand it with the technology that we have.”
