Coach’s Departure: Jayawardene Resigns from Mumbai Indians Headcoach Position
Mahela Jayawardene has officially resigned from his position as Mumbai Indians head coach, a move announced by the franchise on Saturday. As MI’s head coach for the past two seasons during his second spell, Jayawardene returned to the role from 2017 through 2022.
“Mumbai Indians has been a pivotal chapter in my career spanning more than a decade. The players, coaching staff, the unparalleled support of #OneFamily, and most importantly the fans have turned this experience into something I will forever cherish. Together we’ve captured memorable moments, overcome adversity, and built a legacy worth immense pride. I extend our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Nita Ambani and Mr. Akash Ambani for their steadfast trust, support, and lasting friendship throughout these years. I depart with immense pride in what we’ve accomplished and will forever hold MI close to my heart. Wishing the squad continued triumph in the years ahead.”
Jayawardene assumed the head coach role prior to the 2025 IPL, replacing Mark Boucher. During 2022‑2024 he served as Mumbai Indians’ global head of performance, overseeing operations across the league’s various franchises—including MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI New York in the MLC, and MI Cape Town in the SA20.
In his initial tenure as head coach Jayawardene secured three IPL crowns, although during his subsequent stint the side finished fourth in 2025, fell short in Qualifier II, and placed ninth in 2026.
“Mahela has delivered significant contributions to Mumbai Indians over the years,” noted MI owner Nita Ambani. “His steady leadership, integrity, and profound love for the game mean dearly to us. On behalf of the entire MI family, I thank Mahela for his lasting dedication. We will treasured the shared journey and enduring memories. Mahela remains a valued member of our #OneFamily, and we wish him great happiness and success ahead.”
MI, now tasked with finding a replacement with less than a month remaining before the IPL retention deadline—November 15—the board faces considerable pressure. The IPL auction is anticipated roughly a month later in Goa.
Last time the club lifted the trophy in 2020, MI claimed back‑to‑back titles under Jayawardene’s guidance.
Jayawardene’s departure places MI management in a difficult position; captain Hardik Pandya, who earned spotlight after a disappointing final campaign in IPL 2026, has become a focal point. After posting only four wins in twelve matches, rumors of a Hardik trade began surfacing in reports and on social media. Harnessing his batting average of 138.25 and a highest score of 40 over ten innings, Hardik’s limited impact has raised questions about the future direction of the squad.
