Vice President JD Vance stated that the United Kingdom has been “failed by its leadership for a long time” following the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Vance, who has been a consistent critic of the UK and broader European Union since taking office in January 2025, voiced these remarks in a recent interview with The Sunday Times.
While acknowledging Britain as “amazing,” Vance expressed concern over the state of British politics, describing it as “very broken.”
“People are really crying out for significant structural change,” Vance said. “I hope Andy Burnham — and if not Andy Burnham, someone else — is able to deliver it. Because Britain is such a beautiful country, such an amazing place.”
Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister last month amid mounting pressure from poor performance in May’s local elections. He will remain in office until the Labour Party selects a successor.
Meanwhile, the newly elected MP for Makerfield, Andy Burnham, is expected to assume the role of Prime Minister, potentially becoming Britain’s seventh leader in just over a decade. Should he take office, Burnham would focus on revitalizing the nation’s political trajectory.
Vance emphasized the importance of supporting whoever assumes the premiership to steer the UK “back on track.”
US President Donald Trump has previously criticized Starmer, particularly over his refusal to endorse military actions in Iran, immigration policies, and energy decisions. Trump criticized Starmer’s stance on immigration and energy on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, “He failed badly on two very important subjects — immigration and energy (open North Sea oil!).””
Vance has frequently challenged European leaders, raising concerns about freedom of expression and immigration reform. His 2025 remarks at the Munich Security Conference drew sharp rebuke when he attacked EU policymakers and warned of Europe’s retreat from “fundamental values.”
Additionally, in June, following protests in the UK over the killing of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak, Vance attributed the incident to “European elites” and criticized policies targeting migration, asserting that the perpetrator would still be alive “if past generations had resisted mass migration.”
Relations between the US and Europe have further strained over territorial disputes, including President Trump’s pursuit of Greenland for strategic defense purposes. Trump has argued that acquiring the Danish territory is crucial to prevent Chinese or Russian influence in the Arctic region.
