Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra made a surprise return to the stage at TentacleFest in San Francisco on June 27, joining Wheelchair Sports Camp for a performance of their collaborative track ‘Make It Make Sense’. The event marked Biafra’s first public appearance since he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in March due to high blood pressure.
Biafra was hospitalized after collapsing while getting out of bed, an incident he attributed to a sudden leg collapse. His family reported significant progress in his recovery, with speech largely restored and cognitive function returning to normal, though physical rehabilitation continues. Alternative Tentacles, his independent label, noted that Biafra appeared fatigued during the performance and emphasized that his recovery journey remains ongoing.
The appearance represents a notable milestone for the punk pioneer, who led Dead Kennedys from 1978 until the group’s 1986 disbandment. He has since built a career in spoken-word performances and collaborations, including a 2023 performance with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard covering ‘Police Truck’ in New York.
Legal disputes with former Dead Kennedys members concluded in 1999, resulting in Biafra owing royalties and damages while ceding control of most of the band’s catalog. This allowed reissues, including a 2022 remaster of ‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’. Biafra has publicly stated these actions occurred without his knowledge.
