Jeremy Doku has clarified his stance regarding the journalist who criticized his decision to leave the Belgium World Cup camp to attend his first child’s birth.
Doku’s wife, Shireen, was scheduled to give birth in the second week of July, and he had informed Reuters before the tournament that he intended to return to the UK even if Belgium remained in contention. However, L’Equipe presenter France Pierron sparked controversy by labeling the father a “completely useless” individual during childbirth.
L’Equipe later issued an apology, stating that Pierron’s remarks conflicted with their core values. The presenter also apologized and was suspended from her show until its conclusion.
Doku ultimately missed Belgium’s 0-0 draw with Iran to be present for the birth of his son, Praise. On his YouTube channel, he acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the timing of his return.
“There was significant public scrutiny,” Doku explained. “Some questioned whether the situation was deliberately timed given its apparent precision.”
“I understand the skepticism. I saw the journalist speak about me and the backlash she faced. I want to use this platform to encourage empathy and understanding. I’m not targeting her harshly—this is her perspective, though I recognize the consequences she’s faced. I don’t wish for anyone to be treated this way,” Doku stated.
Doku played 86 minutes in Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egypt before missing the subsequent match, which the team attributed to illness. A Belgium official confirmed Doku traveled to London with a team doctor’s approval to support his wife during the birth.
