Dan Quinn departed as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator after the 2023 season to take the head‑coaching role with the Commanders. Both Mike Zimmer and Matt Eberflus each served just one season following Quinn’s exit.
Under Zimmer in 2024, Dallas allowed the 31st‑most points and 28th‑most yards; under Eberflus in 2025, those figures slipped to 32nd in points allowed and 30th in total yards.
Dallas brought in Christian Parker, the Eagles’ passing‑game coordinator and secondary coach, as its new defensive coordinator in an effort to mend the unit. Yet, heading into Thursday’s game, the Cowboys sat 30th in total defense, 31st versus the run and 28th in points allowed.
Against the previously winless Buccaneers, who started an undrafted rookie quarterback, Dallas surrendered 419 total yards—241 on the ground—and fell 24‑16. Jerry Jones acknowledged the defeat as a missed opportunity.
“That’s a question I think every Cowboys fan wonders about—patience may not be the right word here. I like much of what we have, but we let a chance to get better slip away.”
The performance sparked speculation about Parker’s job security.
“Premature,” Jones replied.
Jones affirmed that he still has confidence in Parker.
“I do. Yes, I do,” Jones said. “He’s shouldering the responsibility, which comes with the job, but I believe he’s competent. The approach he’s taking is something I’ll reiterate: what concerns me most tonight is how they ran between the tackles—we allowed that rushing attack to gain traction in an area where we should be strong. That’s an issue we need to examine and address.”
Defensive backs coach and passing‑game coordinator Derrick Ansley is the only current Cowboys assistant who has previously held a defensive coordinator role, having served in that capacity with the Chargers in 2023.
As a result, Dallas is expected to keep Parker in the role through at least the remainder of the season.
