Canada’s historic World Cup run concluded with a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 at Houston Stadium, where head coach Jesse Marsch clarified the exclusion of star fullback Alphonso Davies.
Following the match, Marsch stated during a press conference that Davies withdrew due to a minor setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, which had previously sidelined him for the group stage. He emphasized caution, noting, “He had a hamstring injury he was recovering from. He was on a very linear path up until two days ago, and then he felt a little something. It turned out that it wasn’t anything significant, but he didn’t feel right, and we didn’t want to stress it.”However, other than that, the progression and the routine we put him through in his return to play was really good and really disciplined.”
Despite Davies’ limited participation, Canada achieved a landmark campaign, securing its first-ever World Cup knockout stage appearance.
Davies’ injury-interrupted tournament journey
Davies’ World Cup experience was defined by careful management. The Bayern Munich fullback suffered a hamstring injury during the Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain in May, which kept him out of Canada’s entire group stage while he underwent structured rehabilitation.
His comeback began with a 75th-minute substitute appearance against South Africa in the Round of 32, where he immediately impacted the game. However, a perceived issue during training two days before the Morocco match prompted Marsch to opt out of the lineup entirely, despite Canada’s critical need for his contributions.
Ultimately, Canada fell 3-0 to Morocco, marking the end of a historic but bittersweet tournament that included the nation’s first World Cup victory and maiden knockout stage appearance.
