Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain has joined Netflix’s drama series The Retrievals, created by Sirens and Maid showrunner Molly Smith Metzler.
Inspired by the Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast by Susan Burton, The Retrievals chronicles an unlikely community of IVF patients who unite to sue Yale University after they were operated on without anesthesia due to a nurse stealing their fentanyl. The series serves as a powerful call to justice and a moving exploration of friendship and perseverance.
Chastain joins previously announced cast members Emilia Jones and Amy Ryan. She portrays Kaitlyn Langford, a former art historian trapped in a decade-long cycle of failed fertility treatments. Upon discovering she was a victim of criminal drug diversion at the Yale Fertility Center—alongside Jones’ Gabby Clemente—she faces a devastating personal crisis and becomes a key plaintiff in the historic lawsuit against Yale.
Ryan plays Carla Russo, a veteran Yale Fertility Center nurse who pleaded guilty to diverting massive amounts of fentanyl and diluting it with saline, leaving numerous patients to endure egg retrieval surgery without anesthesia.
Metzler serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer for The Retrievals, produced by LuckyChap and Quiet Coyote. Additional executive producers include Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie for LuckyChap; Colin McKenna and Caitlin Roper for The New York Times; podcast writer Burton; and Lila Negebauer, an alum of Maid and Sirens, who will direct the pilot. The project reunites Metzler and McKenna with Netflix and LuckyChap following their collaborations on the WGA Award-winning Maid and multiple Emmy-nominated Sirens.
