A scoring error has sparked significant controversy surrounding a Women’s Under-19 cricket match between Jharkhand and Uttarakhand in Nagpur. The Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) has filed a complaint with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), alleging that an official scorer’s mistake cost the team the match and ended its tournament campaign.
Uttarakhand posted 134 for six batting first. Jharkhand were eventually bowled out for 133 per the official scorecard, losing by one run. Nevertheless, the JCA contends the match ought to have been declared a tie, as a run was not credited to Jharkhand’s total.
Key Issues Behind the Match Outcome
As reported by The Indian Express, the dispute stems from an incident during the 30th over of Jharkhand’s innings.
A Jharkhand batter was run out attempting a second run on the fourth delivery of the 30th over. The JCA alleges that the batters had already completed the initial run, yet the official scorer failed to register it in the team’s total.
The on-ground scoreboard reflected the updated tally after each ball, but the official scorer’s records omitted the additional run.
Jharkhand’s Tie Belief in Final Moments
The margin proved decisive in the closing stages. Needing two runs to win from the final ball, Jharkhand secured a single, and the players believed they had equalised the scores.
Yet the official result stunned the squad, confirming a one-run defeat.
Team members subsequently contested the scorer’s decision and requested a revision, but the official refused to alter the tally.
JCA Submits BCCI Appeal Over Scoring Error
A Jharkhand official told The Indian Express that the omitted run proved costly, as it not only determined the match result but also ended the team’s tournament campaign.
“The scoreboard at the far end displayed the updated score after every ball, but the principal scorer failed to add that crucial run, which cost us a tie. We asked the scorer to correct it, but he declined. As per the rules, umpires must rely on the official scorer rather than the on-ground scoreboard operator,” a Jharkhand official stated.
The JCA has now escalated the issue to the BCCI, arguing that the match should have been declared a tie but was erroneously recorded as a one-run defeat due to the scoring error.
