John Cena Insists The Rock Never Acquired His Soul Amid WWE Storyline

A former WWE champion has made a notable statement regarding a popular wrestling storyline.

The Rock was entangled in a dramatic storyline with Cody Rhodes, during which he sought to claim The American Nightmare’s soul. Rhodes turned down The Final Boss’ offer at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, but John Cena shockingly betrayed Cody moments later and sided with The Rock.

While appearing at the Edmonton Comics and Entertainment Expo over the weekend, The Cenation Leader made clear that his sole objective was to win a championship and firmly stated that he did not sell his soul to The Rock.

Everyone keeps saying I sold my soul and all that. A few people say I sold my soul to The Rock just because Cody and The Rock were talking about selling souls, and I happened to get involved. Did Travis Scott sell his soul too? I have no idea. Is soul for sale? No, no. I just wanted to win a championship. The Rock doesn’t have my soul. He doesn’t. I don’t think he ever got Cody’s either. I want to make this perfectly clear. There was no soul deal between me and him. We have a great relationship. I don’t need to give him my soul on top of that.

John Cena ultimately dethroned then-Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in the main event of Night Two of WrestleMania 41, with assistance from Travis Scott, to claim a 17th world championship.

Cody Rhodes Reflects on a Bizarre WWE Concept

Cody Rhodes recently had The Rock’s daughter, Simone Johnson (Ava), as a guest on his What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast. During their conversation, Rhodes revealed that he had considered giving his soul to then-WWE NXT General Manager Ava after The Final Boss requested it.

Cody Rhodes: “When the Final Boss asked me for my soul, I thought, you know what would’ve been funny — to give in, but not to him. At a time when you were the NXT General Manager, I thought to myself, ‘That has legs. I’ll never say another word. She’ll speak.'”

Simone Johnson: “I think we would’ve crushed that.”

Rhodes: “We would’ve crushed that. People always say, ‘You don’t want to be a bad guy.’ I’m open to all things. Whatever is the best move. I thought that would have been a real good spin.”

Simone: “I would’ve loved to have done that.”

Rhodes: “How would he have felt?”

Simone: “I think he would’ve been all for it. Absolutely.”

Rhodes: “I can’t believe you never told him.”

Simone: “I don’t think it ever came up because I think he was beating you up, asking you for your soul. I don’t think I knew he was coming back that day. I had no context for what the promo would be. I just saw it and thought, ‘Soul is crazy.'”

Rhodes: “I think we might have had something. Who knows, we might still have something. I thought it was such a fun spin. My soul goes to you and we would’ve wreaked havoc. Sold out every night. That was our idea. It never happened.”

Simone: “Who knows, maybe it could still happen. Never say never.”

It remains to be seen whether WWE will revisit the Cody Rhodes–Rock storyline in the future. Only time will tell.
