John Cena Reveals He Pitched His Own Shocking Tap-Out to End Historic WWE Career

John Cena’s final creative decision caught even WWE’s Chief Content Officer off guard. For two decades, “Never Give Up” served as more than merchandise slogan—it defined the 17-time world champion’s on-screen ethos. Cena had never submitted in nearly 20 years of competition, surviving countless submission holds and winning multiple “I Quit” matches along the way.

That streak ended at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025. Facing Gunther in what was billed as his retirement match, Cena locked in a sleeper hold, looked toward the hard camera, smiled, and tapped out. The arena erupted in boos, and the decision drew significant criticism toward The Ring General.

Cena Pitched the Finish Himself

During the latest season of WWE Unreal, which documents Cena’s farewell tour, the franchise star revealed the finish was his idea. He learned Gunther would be his final opponent before the originally planned program with Brock Lesnar materialized. Upon hearing the news, Cena immediately approached Triple H with a specific request.

“I knew Gunther was my last opponent before I knew I was wrestling Brock. Immediately, Hunter was like, ‘I’m thinking Gunther.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I get to tap out.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, I mean, you would do that?’ This is beautiful. The never give up guy gives up.”
