According to recent reports from Fightful Select, John Cena competing in another wrestling promotion was never considered a possibility following his retirement match last December at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC. The outlet notes that Cena previously labeled such a move as “financial suicide.”
After his retirement bout, Cena has committed to a five-year ambassador contract with WWE, which currently prevents him from competing outside the company.
Fightful Select also reports that the John Cena Classic is expected to launch this December, though this timeline remains subject to change. Cena first announced the event during this year’s Backlash in May. The Classic will feature interbrand matches between Raw, SmackDown, and NXT talent, with the ultimate champion to be crowned through fan voting.
