John Mayer has launched his own record label, Sob Rock Records, named after his 2021 album. The venture arrives via a partnership with Mercury Records, where Mayer signed after departing Columbia Records in 2022.

“Working with [Mercury Chairman and CEO] Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” Mayer said in a statement. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

The label’s first release will be Mayer’s new single “Tom and Jerry,” arriving this Friday — his first new music since Sob Rock. Produced by Mayer alongside Blake Slatkin, the track will debut Thursday on his SiriusXM channel “Life With John Mayer” before hitting streaming platforms at midnight.

Mayer has spent the past week teasing the song on social media. On Wednesday, he shared the cover art and revealed an all-star cast of session musicians: bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Aaron Sterling, percussionist Lenny Castro, and organist Larry Goldings. The track was recorded at Chaplin Recording Studio.

“‘Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea. ‘And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you,'” Mayer wrote in the caption. “From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating every time — I get to work with a group of incredibly talented and deeply dedicated artists who will stop at nothing until the sound comes into focus and becomes a picture. I can’t wait to tell you more about it, but first, it’s important that you know who contributed to this track.”

He followed up with additional clips: a studio video of him singing along, an alternate lyric snippet, and an instrumental passage.

“John Mayer is one of the greatest artists of all time, and I couldn’t be prouder to welcome him to Mercury Records,” Arnold said in a statement. “We’re excited to be part of his next chapter and to partner with his label, Sob Rock Records, to help bring his creative vision to life.”

Beyond the label launch, Mayer announced a return to the Sphere in Las Vegas for an April 2027 residency. The run will feature three distinct configurations: a solo acoustic set, a full-band performance, and a show with the John Mayer Trio.
