Beach Boys frontman Mike Love is confronting serious health issues, according to longtime friend John Stamos, who shared the update on Sunday ahead of the band’s performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium.
“We hope he can continue doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds,” Stamos said of Love, whom he described as a father figure, musical hero, and mentor, and admitted he was struggling to put his feelings into words.
Mike is a fighter. Despite doctors, family, and friends urging him to prioritize his health, he insists on taking the stage,” Stamos added on Instagram. “He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends, and drummer around him for support. I’ve played with Mike for 41 years; I never imagined how deeply it would affect me to see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile.”
Stamos cautioned fans, who had expressed concern after seeing Love appear weaker during a Cincinnati show, that tonight’s performance might differ from the Mike they know. “He’s still every bit the Mike we love. His lyrics, optimism, unforgettable hooks, and more than 7,000 concerts have brought joy to generations. What he’s given me personally is immeasurable,” he said.
Stamos reflected on Love’s personal impact as a friend, musician, and mentor, sharing the depth of their 41‑year friendship. He emphasized his intention to be “completely present” during the upcoming Nashville show and later expanded on these thoughts in a longer Facebook post.
The previous evening, at their first public concert since July (aside from a private show in Dana Point, California), Love appeared frail, according to a fan‑recorded video. Stamos escorted him to a chair at the start of the set, where Love remained seated, moving only slightly with hand gestures, before being triumphantly helped to his feet to the sound of the “Rocky” theme.
The group had cancelled several dates prior to the Cincinnati concert because of Love’s health issues.
Before the Cincinnati show, Stamos told the audience, according to a fan video, that Love had “been going through some health issues.” “He’s had to cancel some shows, but he would not miss tonight. We sort of said ‘stay home,’ but he was like, ‘No, I’m going to Cincinnati,’” Stamos said. “It’s what he loves most. He loves the audience, he loves the music, and he knows how important it is to all of you. We’re all here to support him and give him as much love as we can. So ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Beach Boys.”
During the Nashville performance, Love briefly acknowledged his health struggles, stating, “I’ve been going through health challenges, but I had to make it to the Ryman.”
The Beach Boys are scheduled to perform next on November 11 at Disney World, with a subsequent show in Bristol, Virginia on November 13.
