Jon Watts to Helm Upcoming Star Wars Film

A new Star Wars film is in active development with director Jon Watts attached to the project.

Watts, acclaimed for his work on the Spider-Man trilogy directed by Tom Holland—including Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)—brings his experience to the galaxy far, far away. His filmography also includes Cop Car and Clown, showcasing his versatility in genre storytelling.

In 2024, Watts co-created the New Republic-set series Skeleton Crew with Christopher Ford, exploring a coming-of-age narrative through four young characters. The show featured Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood alongside Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith.

Watts joins a lineage of acclaimed Star Wars directors, including Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, J.J. Abrams, and Rian Johnson. His appointment follows the franchise’s most recent theatrical release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), directed by Abrams.

According to Variety, Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Kinberg has been tasked with penning the script. Known for his contributions to the X-Men franchise, Kinberg’s involvement marks a notable collaboration within the Star Wars creative team.
