A significant fallout between Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus has placed Portugal in a precarious position. With the captain serving a 30-day suspension, the national squad faces a crucial decision ahead of the imminent November UEFA Nations League matches. All attention is fixed on the Portuguese camp to determine whether CR7 and the manager can resolve their differences and pave the way for the all-time leading scorer to return.
The dispute originated during the September international break, when Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway. The decision appeared to anger the forward, who felt Jesus had violated an agreement regarding his playing time.
Jesus has insisted that team selection is a managerial responsibility, with individual match circumstances determining his choices. He has also suggested that Ronaldo remains welcome to return, though recent reports indicate that reassurances alone have proven insufficient to resolve their differences.

On October 19, FPF disciplinary authorities handed down a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine, roughly $286, following Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp. The sanction was backdated to September 30, meaning much of the punishment had already been served by the time the decision was announced.
Reports indicate that mitigating factors included Ronaldo’s formal admission of the facts, his previous disciplinary record, and his contributions to the national team. Consequently, the sanction does not automatically rule him out of Portugal’s November fixtures.
The 41-year-old remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer, having netted 146 times in 234 international appearances. While his continued availability could prove valuable, ultimate selection decisions rest with Jesus, and the unresolved dispute introduces further complexity to the coach’s preparations.

Ronaldo receives suspension and fine
The latest development stems from reports by Saudi outlet Al-Wiam Sports indicating that Jesus has informed Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proenca that he would welcome Ronaldo’s return, contingent on the forward meeting certain conditions. According to the report, Ronaldo has thus far rejected those conditions, while Proenca continues efforts to broker a formal meeting between the parties.
The specific conditions remain unconfirmed publicly, leaving uncertainty regarding Jesus’s exact expectations of the veteran forward. The disagreement indicates that, despite the federation’s attempts to repair the relationship, the dispute remains unresolved.

Proenca has continued to advocate for reconciliation, characterizing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as a significant figure in Portuguese soccer. However, a successful return will likely hinge on whether the player and coach can reach a mutual understanding before Portugal’s next international commitments.
Upcoming matches against Denmark on November 14 and Wales on November 17 could prove pivotal in determining Ronaldo’s immediate international future. Although the suspension is largely in the past, his return remains contingent on reconciliation with Jesus and a coaching decision to include him in the squad.
