Cristiano Ronaldo recently stepped away from the Portugal national team during the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League campaign, and head coach Jorge Jesus has now indicated that the door remains open for the forward to return.
After Portugal defeated Norway 2–1 on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Nations League, Jesus addressed one of the most prominent stories surrounding the national team: Ronaldo’s unexpected departure from the squad.
“Everything is still open,” Jesus said in a press conference when asked about the striker’s possible return. “Cristiano is the one who decides his future; it doesn’t depend on me. What happened was simply a misunderstanding, and in my opinion, it will be very easy to resolve.”
Teammates back Ronaldo’s return
Since Ronaldo’s sudden exit, several of his Portugal teammates have weighed in on the situation. While some said they were encouraged not to focus heavily on the topic, the general mood inside the dressing room reflects a strong wish to see him back.

Following Portugal’s win over Norway, Nuno Mendes suggested that, like any other player, Ronaldo would be welcomed back without hesitation if he chooses to return. The fullback added that the final decision ultimately rests with the forward.
Joao Cancelo was also asked about the situation and emphasized that Ronaldo remains an icon and the captain of the Portugal national team. His comments suggested that the squad does not believe the forward’s international career is over.
Ronaldo may want more than a farewell match
Ronaldo’s competitive instinct is well known throughout the game. He originally aimed to pursue another UEFA Nations League title, but with the recent upheaval, many believe a single ceremonial farewell match could mark his final appearance for Portugal.
Still, a formal send-off may not satisfy the veteran star. With his drive to win another major trophy still intact, a farewell appearance alone may not be enough to close out his international career on his own terms.
