Left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming has spent much of the past several seasons as a seasoned depth option for various organizations. After contributing to the Tampa Bay Rays, he later served as experience for the Pittsburgh Pirates before returning to major league action with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Fleming’s tenure with Toronto was short-lived. Just days after being released, he secured a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs, marking his return to competitive play following his limited $3,000 Blue Jays stint.
“The Cubs are motivated to add pitching depth,” reports Marquee Sports Network’s Lance Brozdowski. “Fleming, who pinch-hit briefly for Toronto and gave up four runs over three innings, is now available to contribute in Chicago’s system.”
Though his Blue Jays appearance lasted only three innings, Fleming’s extended outings in Triple-A Buffalo kept him active. The Cubs see potential in his versatility as both a starter and reliever, offering a low-risk option to fill pitching needs without occupying a 40-man roster spot.
