Judicial Order Halts Proposed Merger Between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery

Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin has issued a temporary stay on the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. A coalition of states has argued that the deal violates federal antitrust laws, potentially resulting in increased consumer prices and a reduction in the production of film and television content.

The ruling follows Paramount’s prior agreement to delay the transaction until July 22. A 12-state coalition, spearheaded by California, presented closing arguments following their motion for a temporary restraining order, seeking to block the deal for a 28-day period. Furthermore, the states are pursuing a preliminary injunction to allow the judge to rule on the legal merits of their lawsuit.
