With the squad returning from its preseason tour in Seoul, South Korea, players will enjoy two days of rest before training resumes on Wednesday, when Alvarez is set to rejoin his teammates on the pitch. Heading into Friday’s final exhibition match against Marseille, the Argentine was included as a full participant in Diego Simeone’s squad.

Alvarez expresses frustration over canceled Atletico executive meeting

Atletico executives have consistently maintained that Alvarez is an integral member of the team and wil not be transferred unless a club activates his €500 million (approximately $578 million USD) release clause. Despite the striker’s opposing position, a formal discussion between both parties was anticipated upon his return.

According to Barcelona insider Gerard Romero of Jijantes FC, Alvarez and the club’s leadership had previously agreed to a meeting on August 10 to address his future. However, the meeting ultimately did not occur, leaving the former Manchester City forward deeply aggrieved by the club’s failure to fulfill its commitment.

After completing his medical examinations in Madrid, Romero reported that Alvarez met with his representatives, Fernando Hidalgo and Sergio Diaz. The two-hour discussion focused on strategic planning for the upcoming days, with one definitive objective in place.

Romero, Argentina insider Gaston Edul, and Spanish publications such as Diario Sport and Mundo Deportivo concur on a singular point: Julian Alvarez is prepared to join FC Barcelona during the 2026 summer transfer window. The next phase involves securing a direct meeting with Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin to communicate his position directly.

Up to this point, Alvarez has not shown any intention to initiate a holdout or breach his contractual obligations.
