July 7 in NHL History: Fetisov Signings Open Europe, Lightning Dynasty, and Sakic’s Birthdate]
July 7 has been a pivotal date in NHL history, highlighted by landmark signings that opened the door for European players, coaching changes, and memorable playoff runs. Here’s a look at the key moments that have shaped hockey on this date.
Devils Pave the Way for European Players
On July 7, 1989, the New Jersey Devils announced the signings of Viacheslav Fetisov and Sergei Starikov from the Soviet Union. These moves fundamentally changed the NHL by establishing pathways for European talent to join North American leagues without defecting from their international teams.
Before Fetisov’s arrival, Russian players faced a difficult choice: abandon their Olympic aspirations or remain overseas. Fetisov’s negotiated agreement allowed him to play in the NHL while preserving his eligibility for international competition. The defenseman had spent 13 seasons with CSKA Moscow, was originally drafted by Montreal in 1978, and finally made his NHL debut at age 31 with the Devils.
Fetisov played 341 games for New Jersey before being traded to Detroit in 1995. He added 205 more games with the Red Wings, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998. His post-playing career included roles as a coach, general manager, and president, with a brief return to playing at age 51 for CSKA Moscow.

Starikov, drafted by the Devils in 1989, played 16 NHL games and had sporadic appearances across multiple minor leagues before retiring in 1993.
Coaching Changes Across the League
July 7 has seen several notable coaching appointments throughout NHL history.
In 1980, Gerry Cheevers retired as a player and became head coach of the Boston Bruins, replacing Harry Sinden. Cheevers led the Bruins to the best record in the league during the 1982-83 season and won 204 games over four seasons behind the bench.

Jack Evans was hired by the Hartford Whalers in 1983, and Joel Quenneville took over the Colorado Avalanche in 2004. Quenneville later won three Stanley Cups with Chicago from 2010-2015.
Lightning Complete Dynasty with Back-to-Back Titles
On July 7, 2022, the Tampa Bay Lightning secured their second consecutive Stanley Cup by defeating the Montreal Canadiens 1-0. Ross Colton’s second-period goal and Andrei Vasilevskiy’s 22-save shutout completed a five-game series victory.
Vasilevskiy earned the Conn Smythe Trophy with a 1.90 GAA and .937 save percentage across 23 playoff games. The Lightning became the first team since Pittsburgh (2016-17) to repeat as champions, joining an elite group of dual winners in NHL history.

Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point also delivered historic performances, with Kucherov becoming the first player since Mario Lemieux to lead the postseason in points in consecutive seasons without tied, and Point matching the feat in goals scored.
Notable Additions and Milestones
The Chicago Blackhawks named Tommy Ivan general manager in 1954, and Mark Howe signed with Detroit in 1992. Howe, son of Gordie Howe, played three seasons with the Red Wings and mentored young defensemen like Nicklas Lidstrom.
The 2022 NHL Draft took place in Montreal on July 7, with the Canadiens selecting Juraj Slafkovsky first overall. It was the first in-person draft event since 2019 following the pandemic-induced virtual drafts of 2020 and 2021.
Celebrating Hockey’s Future Hall of Famer
Joe Sakic, the greatest player in Nordiques/Avalanche history, was born on July 7, 1969. Drafted 15th overall by Quebec in 1987, Sakic amassed 626 points in 508 games with the Nordiques before moving to Colorado, where he added 1,015 points in 870 games. A two-time Stanley Cup winner (1996, 2001) and Conn Smythe Trophy winner (1996), Sakic later served as the Avalanche’s general manager from 2014-2022.
