The Chicago Cubs continues to bolster their roster with strategic additions as they push toward the postseason. Following a trade deadline emphasis on adding depth, the organization claimed outfielder Justin Dean off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, who had previously acquired him from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Dean’s persistence paid off in a meaningful way last week when he recorded his first major-league hit during his initial appearance with Chicago. The right-handed batter delivered a triple in his first at-bat, sending a center-cut sinker past right fielder Jesus Sanchez into the corner.
“I almost cried,” Dean said. “We kept it inside, though. I’ve been waiting a long time for that. I’m super happy it came at this stadium, with this team and with these guys.”
The 28-year-old outfielder brings both speed and defensive versatility, having appeared in 18 regular-season games and 13 postseason contests with the Dodgers during their World Series-winning campaign last year. While he went 0-for-3 at the plate in those limited opportunities, he gained recognition for a crucial defensive sequence in Game 6 of the World Series that helped secure Los Angeles’ championship.
Dean’s triple in his Cubs debut provided immediate highlight-reel value and demonstrated why several organizations have maintained interest in his services despite his underwhelming offensive numbers in limited duty.
