Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed this week that he desired to see his starters execute six to nine plays of “crisp and clean” football during Thursday’s final preseason contest. He aptly noted, “It’s never perfect, but you want to see that level of crispness and execution. That’s what you want to see the most.”
The coach was certainly pleased with one of Herbert’s two offensive possessions.
The starting quarterback saw limited action last week against the 49ers, going 1-of-2 for just 9 yards as the Chargers managed a three-and-out. He began Thursday’s matchup against the Rams with a fumble on the second play after the ball slipped from his grasp.
Herbert remained in the game for one additional series consisting of two plays, during which he connected with Quentin Johnston on a 65-yard touchdown pass.
Herbert finished the game with 74 yards passing on 2-of-3 attempts, including his touchdown strike.
Trey Lance replaced Herbert at the quarterback position on the first play of the second quarter.
