A K2 Airways Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft operating a flight from Sharjah to Karachi lost radar contact approximately 300 kilometers west of Karachi over the Arabian Sea on Tuesday.
Initial reports indicate the pilot encountered navigation issues during the flight and sought assistance from the Karachi Area Control Centre. The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) confirmed the aircraft reported a navigational system problem at 9:18pm and was receiving guidance from air traffic control before radar contact was suddenly lost.
At 9:21pm, the aircraft was detected on radar making a rapid descent and abrupt course change. Contact was subsequently lost around 155 nautical miles (287 kilometers) west of Karachi, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre with multiple agencies.
The aircraft was carrying five crew members, according to the PAA. The Bureau of Air Safety Investigation will conduct a formal inquiry into the incident to determine the cause of the disappearance.
