In NFL Preseason Week 2, the Kansas City Chiefs delivered a stunning performance when kicker Harrison Butker successfully kicked a 69-yard field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, potentially setting a new unofficial record for the longest field goal in league history.
The Chiefs are back in full form following the return of tight end Travis Kelce on a new contract and quarterback Patrick Mahomes after recovering from a torn ACL sustained in Week 15 of last season.
While Butker’s kick would have broken the record, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little still holds the unofficial record with a 68-yard field goal against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
Since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2017 from Georgia Tech, Butker has demonstrated consistent excellence, converting 251 of his 285 field-goal attempts. His career-long kick remains a 62-yarder against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6 of the 2022 season. This 69-yarder also stands as the longest field goal in Arrowhead Stadium history and a franchise record for the Chiefs.
Although the kick may not officially count, it underscores Butker’s exceptional skill and resilience. Previously the highest-paid kicker in the NFL, he was recently surpassed by Dallas Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey, who signed a record-breaking contract extension this offseason.
The Chiefs are set to open their 2023 campaign at home against the Denver Broncos in an AFC West showdown on Monday, September 14.
