Karmine Corp, LYON, and Bilibili Gaming secured the final three knockout-stage spots at the League of Legends World Championship with Round 5 victories on Saturday in Allen, Texas.
Facing elimination on the final day of the Swiss stage, teams with 2-2 records competed for advancement. Karmine Corp defeated Movistar KOI 2-0, Bilibili Gaming swept Hanwha Life Esports, and LYON overcame LOS 2-1.
Early Swiss-stage matches consisted of a single game, while advancement and elimination matches were played as best-of-three series.
Eight of the 16 Swiss-stage teams qualified for the knockout stage, which begins Tuesday with a single-elimination bracket. Knockout matches are best-of-five and will be held in Allen, Texas, except for the grand final on November 14 at Barclays Center in New York.
The championship team will receive $1 million from the event’s $5 million prize pool.
Karmine Corp, the only team to advance from the play-in stage to the knockout round, won both games in 40 and 26 minutes, respectively, from the blue side. Martin “Yike” Sundelin of Sweden and Peru led Karmine with 11 kills and two deaths. Joseph “Jojopyun” Pyun of Canada topped Movistar KOI with a 6-6-7 kills-deaths-assists ratio.
Bilibili Gaming completed its sweep of Hanwha Life with 42- and 33-minute victories on blue. Zhuo “Knight” Ding of China earned match MVP honors with a 15-1-12 KDA ratio. Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyung led the all-South Korean Hanwha roster with a 9-4-9 KDA ratio.
After LOS won the opening map in 35 minutes on red, LYON rallied with a 47-minute win on red and a 37-minute clincher on blue. Kim “Berserker” Min-cheol of South Korea accounted for 16 of LYON’s 34 kills, while Brazil’s Wallyson “Duduhh” Silva posted a 10-8-6 KDA ratio for LOS in defeat.
