Katherine Legge endured an exceptionally long day, becoming only the sixth driver in history to attempt both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca‑Cola 600 on the same day.
She joins an elite group that previously includes Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson.
After securing a career‑best qualifying position in her fifth Indy 500 attempt, Legge’s race concluded after just 17 laps when Ryan Hunter‑Reay spun at the exit of Turn 2, causing her to collide with the inside wall on the backstretch. She was classified 33rd and last in the 110th running.
After 42.5 miles at Indianapolis, she boarded a flight to Charlotte Motor Speedway, taking the wheel of the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet and navigating the early stages without incident.
Shortly after Stage 3 began, she limped to the pits with a mechanical issue; moments later the right‑front wheel detached, bringing out a caution.
The team persisted, and Legge finished 12 laps down on the eventual winner Daniel Suarez, classified 31st. Across both events she completed 361 laps and 541.5 miles, falling short of the intended 1,100‑mile total. Additionally, rain truncated the Coke 600 27 laps before the scheduled distance.

After the event, Legge spoke candidly about the difficulty of the day.
“I think the highlight for me will be when I can finally lie down tonight, because I’m so tired,” she joked during an interview with NASCAR on Prime.
“But the opportunity to attempt this double‑header is itself a highlight. We’ll regroup, reflect on what we could have done differently, and recognize that despite the errors, there are positives to take from the experience,” she added.
She expressed a wish that the car she finished with in the Coke 600 had been the same specification as the one she started the race with, noting that the team made significant setup improvements during the second half.
