The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, with Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay earning 19 nominations. If the series takes the top comedy prize, its creator would become only the sixth woman to win the category as the sole creator of her own show.
That creator is Katie Dippold, whose horror-comedy Widow’s Bay is reportedly listed as an 82% favorite on prediction market Kalshi.
Dippold’s résumé includes The Heat, the all-female Ghostbusters, Snatched and Haunted Mansion, projects that featured stars such as Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer and Kristen Wiig. With Widow’s Bay, the name driving the project is finally her own.
Katie Dippold’s Widow’s Bay Emmy Prospects
Widow’s Bay has no male co-creator. Dippold did not inherit the series from another showrunner or develop it with a writing partner. She sold the show, cast it, wrote the first season and is the sole creator listed on the Emmy ballot. Many roundups reduce her to a “former Parks and Recreation writer,” but that shorthand erases nearly 18 years of work.
From Federal Rejections to the Upright Citizens Brigade
In a recent interview with W Magazine, Dippold said she did not originally plan to build a career in comedy writing. After graduating from Rutgers, she applied to the CIA and the FBI but was rejected by both, in part because she believes she had “tried too many drugs.” Improv became her next path, leading her to New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade alongside Amy Poehler and Adam McKay.
In February 2012, while writing for Parks and Recreation, Dippold sold a spec script to producer Peter Chernin for $600,000. Paul Feig came aboard to direct, and the project became The Heat, which grossed $229.9 million at the box office.
How Widow’s Bay Got Made: An 18-Year Path From Spec Script to Apple TV
The rapid rise of Widow’s Bay masks a much longer backstory. Dippold nearly sold the project to Amazon in 2013, but her instincts told her to pull it back. “I just had this bad feeling. I put a pin in it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. Apple TV ordered the series in September 2024. It premiered on April 29, 2026, carries a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score and was renewed in June as part of a multi-year Apple deal.
A win tonight would make Dippold only the sixth woman to win the comedy-series Emmy as the sole creator of her own show. The previous winners are Susan Harris for The Golden Girls in 1987, Diane English for Murphy Brown in 1990, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, Amy Sherman-Palladino for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag. In all, six women have reached that milestone in 74 years.
Dippold spent 18 years writing in rooms run by other people. On Emmy night, she finds out whether the Television Academy is ready to put her in charge of one.
