Kazakhstan’s financial regulator has obtained court orders barring Coinbase and five other cryptocurrency platforms from providing unauthorized services in the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC).
The Astana Financial Services Authority (AFSA) said the injunctions apply to BingX, Bitcoin.com, Huobi Global (HTX), BitMart, Coinbase and WEEX. The platforms are prohibited from offering or promoting digital asset services without a license, or distributing mobile applications for those services, within the centre.
The measures do not impose a nationwide ban. In a Sept. 15 ruling, Justice Sir Stephen Richards said the injunctions apply solely to the AIFC and to users located there.
Located in Kazakhstan’s capital, the AIFC operates under its own legal framework and regulatory regime. Crypto firms must obtain a license before providing services within the centre.
The order also applies to Google and Apple as app-store operators, although the court declined to issue separate injunctions against them. The court said AFSA should first discuss the necessary steps with the companies.
LBank was included in the initial proceedings but was removed on Sept. 18 after it addressed AFSA’s concerns. According to the regulator, the platform subsequently blocked access to its services in Kazakhstan.
