Kenyan Authorities Launch Charges Against Students Over Dorm Fire Tragedy
The Kenya Prosecutor’s Office has formally submitted murder charges against a group of students accused of igniting a dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 girls in May. Authorities emphasize recent safety violations at the Utumishi Girls School and warn of a disturbing rise in school fires nationwide.
Police confirmed arrests of nine suspects linked to setting a mattress ablaze near an emergency exit. The victims were forced to evacuate through a single doorway when the school matron failed to open a safe route. The case underscores ongoing concerns over fire safety and school infrastructure across the country.
Kenya’s Education Ministry has suspended the principal of Utumishi Girls School for breaching fire safety regulations and ordered the closure of over 300 schools following a 2024 incident that resulted in 21 fatalities. Officials caution that poor electrical connections and overcrowded dormitories often contribute to such outbreaks.
Historically, Kenya has experienced devastating school fires, including a 2001 tragedy in Machakos County where 67 students perished due to similar circumstances. Authorities stress the importance of improving emergency protocols and fire prevention measures to safeguard students.
