In Nairobi, one hundred Kenyan physical education teachers and educators have completed a training program in inclusive basketball coaching, aimed at enabling children with disabilities to engage meaningfully in sport.
The session took place on Tuesday at the Fam Sports Arena Basketball Court in Kitengela and was organized by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group and NBA Africa as part of the Basketball Experience initiative.
The Basketball Experience Disability Inclusion (BE-DI) Teachers Awareness Day provided educators with practical skills to teach basketball fundamentals while accommodating children with diverse learning needs.
The full‑day program integrated classroom instruction with on‑court drills drawn from the Jr. NBA curriculum, emphasizing safe, age‑appropriate, and inclusive coaching methods.
By employing adaptive coaching techniques, accessible activities, and inclusive curriculum design, the initiative aims to dismantle barriers that hinder children with disabilities from participating in sport.
In addition, life‑skills training was delivered in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, underscoring how sport can foster teamwork, resilience, leadership, health awareness, and social responsibility.
AFD and NBA Africa reported that the broader Basketball Experience program leverages basketball to advance education, life skills, and inclusive opportunities for youth across communities.
By equipping teachers to accommodate varying abilities, the initiative strives to create sporting environments where children can learn, play, and develop together both on and off the court.
