Kenya’s WANTAM Organisation Announces Presidential Debate for Critical 2027 Election Campaign August 23]

Kenya’s WANTAM movement, dedicated to uniting opposition forces against President William Ruto, has announced plans to host an interactive debate on August 23 for leading presidential and running-mate contenders. The event, co-produced with investigative media organisation Africa Uncensored, aims to present a unified opposition ticket for the 2027 General Election.

Francis Masinde, convenor of the WANTAM Advisory Committee, revealed that the debate’s format will diverge from traditional political debates, incorporating non-conventional methods to facilitate discussions and enhance audience engagement.

While final production details are currently being finalised, Masinde confirmed that the WANTAM movement is extending formal invitations to prominent opposition politicians, including presidential candidate Kalonzo Musyoka, running-mate Edwin Sifuna, and other influential figures within the movement.

Masinde emphasised that the debate would not only feature direct dialogues between contenders but also serve as a strategic platform for building consensus within the opposition ranks. He called upon the leaders to transcend personal ambitions and rally behind a single candidate poised to challenge Ruto’s administration.

A recent online poll conducted by WANTAM, which experienced multiple successful and unsuccessful attempts by hackers, revealed that Kalonzo holds a slight lead over Senator Sifuna in the presidential race. However, Sifuna is ahead in the race for vice-presidential candidates.

The WANTAM platform provides ongoing updates regarding the movement’s process, projecting a Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket, though Masinde stressed that more stages remain before a final decision by the opposition to agree on their preferred candidates for the upcoming November elections.

Masinde contended that President Ruto’s initiatives are insufficient and that the debate would shift focus to offer voters an authentic understanding of each candidate’s agenda, thereby enabling them to make informed decisions by 2027.

The debate will be a significant milestone in WANTAM’s journey, transitioning their process from an online popularity contest to a real-world political test of the candidates’ viability and ability to inspire and lead the opposition.
