Following their 26-19 win over the New York Jets, the New England Patriots are dealing with significant offensive injuries heading into their Thursday night game against the Chicago Bears. With multiple key players potentially unavailable, the team must rely heavily on their defense — and veteran safety Kevin Byard is stepping up as a crucial voice.
Byard, a three-time First-Team All-Pro who previously played two seasons with the Bears, is using his familiarity with head coach Ben Johnson’s offensive strategies to prepare his teammates for the challenges ahead. Speaking to reporters, Byard emphasized the need for mental focus and discipline.
“I practiced against Ben Johnson’s offense,” Byard said. “You talk about scheme, and I know Ben, it being Thursday night he’s going to have some stuff up his sleeve. It’s a prime-time game, he’s going to want to show off his expertise, I would say. So, I’m just telling the guys {to have} great discipline, read your keys, play with great eyes, and after that, just fly around, make plays.”
The Patriots are facing a depleted offensive lineup, with Romeo Doubs placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury. A.J. Brown is still working through the aftermath of a lengthy stay on injured reserve and may struggle with the compressed schedule. The offensive line is especially thin, with center Ben Brown and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker listed as doubtful, while tackle Morgan Moses is questionable after appearing with a walking boot during Sunday’s game.
While Byard hasn’t replicated his Pro Bowl form with the Patriots — still seeking his first interception after recording seven in 2025 — his veteran presence remains vital. His recent performance against the Jets included three missed tackles, but his understanding of complex offensive systems continues to provide value.
