Kevin Knight Highlights Key Influences: From Independent Roots to AEW & Lighthearted Take on Musicians Style
Kevin Knight describes representing authentic expression as one of his primary motivations throughout his career in professional wrestling.
During an exclusive conversation with Hot 100.9, Knight discusses his drive to achieve recognition similar to that he longed to see as a fan.
“I sought to build the exact version of wrestling I enjoyed watching. Growing up, prominent Black competitors faced significant limitations—they were confined to particular roles or ignored altogether,” Knight said.
“My fundamental objective was simply to become a true reflection of myself while earning genuine respect. That defined my entry point.”
Knight identifies Swerve Strickland and Lio Rush as two foundational influences that propelled him into the industry.
“Those two emerged as my most significant mentors precisely when I first stepped inside. Observing them rise through independent circuits, unafraid to present their authentic selves as accomplished individuals, was profoundly moving. Something from my youth I never experienced, so I resolved to carry that energy forward.”
Recent ring opportunities have confirmed those aspirations. As he put it,
“Occурs with Strickland marked my first major event this year. Defending a championship matchhead against Rush added a treasured milestone to my journey.”
In separate remarks, Knight humorously evaluated recent trends among AEW performers when pressed about musical preferences among rosters.
“When considering Will Ospreay, there is an undeniable sentiment of affection—it stems largely from my deep connection to his British heritage, regardless of genre choices. Grime rap originates from England, which adds to its appeal.”
Turning to Gabe Kidd, Knight maintains a more critical stance.
“As far as style goes, nothing connects with my taste. While his nationality as fellow Englishperson offers interesting context, I cannot extend an invitation to either artist based on genre alignment.”
