As discussions continue, the USMCA will remain in effect for another decade, with a scheduled expiration in 2036.
For the time being, the United States, Canada, and Mexico have three possible courses of action.
Although President Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the USMCA, business leaders in Canada consider a full withdrawal to be the least probable outcome.
“We all hope that won’t happen,” Darby remarked, noting that U.S. trade officials recognize the agreement’s benefits for all three nations.
He also warned that annual review cycles could create damaging uncertainty for Canadian enterprises.
Ultimately, the final decision will likely rest with the U.S. president.
Hoekstra conveyed a similar view, telling CTV that the future of North American free trade depends on Trump and Carney.
Trump’s recent statements about the USMCA have been mixed; he has said he is “not looking to renew it” while also indicating he is “open” to extending it.
Carney has noted that it is “no secret” Trump dislikes the USMCA, but acknowledged that U.S. negotiators have recognized the pact’s solid underlying structure.
“What I have seen with the president is you’re not close to making a deal – and then you make a deal,” he told reporters recently.
