The newcomers had only a single practice session on Saturday before this opening game, with a second matchup scheduled for Tuesday evening at Northwell Health Ice Center.
The contest concluded with a 5-4 overtime victory for the Islanders.
Anton Silaev Has Arrived
The anticipation to see Anton Silaev in Devils colors has ended. The 6‑foot‑7 Russian defenseman turned heads during weekend practices, displaying both his imposing stature and skillful play. Speaking with media yesterday, he noted that he has spent the past two weeks acclimating to North America under the guidance of his mentor, Arseny Gritsyuk.
As the sole first‑round pick at camp, expectations for Silaev were high, yet he has impressed early on. Paired with Seamus Casey on the top defensive pairing, the two demonstrated seamless chemistry reminiscent of veteran teammates.
His impact was evident right away in the opening period, when Silaev saw early penalty‑kill action, using his size to clear the puck and protect the net. His standout attribute, however, is his skating—smooth and effortless across all three zones, even though he had to adjust to a smaller ice surface compared to the KHL rinks he’s accustomed to.

He registered multiple shots on goal in each period, underscoring a strong net‑front presence. Additionally, Silaev showcased his physicality with a substantial hit on Islanders forward Tomas Poletin.
Offensive Pressure Was Rewarded
Although the first period ended scoreless, the Devils generated numerous scoring chances. Lenni Hameenaho came within inches of beating Joshua Kotai, while Ben Steeves and Josh Filmon also created several opportunities.
Despite their early offensive pressure, the Devils surrendered the lead early in the second period. Daniil Prokhorov gave the Islanders a 1‑0 advantage at the 5:56 mark.
The Devils’ persistence paid off late in the second frame. With five minutes left, Mikael Diotte tied the game on a pass from Matyas Melovsky. Just 41 seconds later, Luke Wilfley snapped a shot to give New Jersey its first lead of the afternoon.
The Islanders responded in the third period, as Prokhorov equalized at 2‑2. On their second power play, Victor Eklund slipped the puck past Jakub Malek’s blocker to put New York ahead 3‑2.

Melovsky then took over the third period, netting two goals with less than ten minutes remaining. Sustained offensive pressure from the Devils enabled them to erase deficits twice.
Prospect Pool Looks Promising
After regulation finished tied at 4‑4, the game moved to overtime, where the Islanders secured the win with Cole Eiserman’s second goal just one minute into the extra frame.
Although the result fell short of fans’ hopes, the rookie squad delivered a solid performance considering they had only one full practice together. As camp continues, they will develop better chemistry, but the Devils’ prospect pool remains a notable strength.
Players to watch include Silaev, Hameenaho, and Melovsky. All three flashed NHL‑caliber ability, yet Melovsky stood out with three points. Moving forward, the 22‑year‑old prospect merits close attention.
