Throughout the week at Farnborough, discussions about the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) filled the exhibition halls, display areas, and high‑level briefings.
With the European Future Combat Air System (FCAS) effectively discontinued last month, GCAP stands as the sole multinational sixth‑generation fighter effort, aside from the U.S. F‑47 program, driving intense interest in the platform.
From possible new participants to the planned bridging aircraft, this article outlines the essential developments surrounding GCAP as reported by the Breaking Defense team on site at Farnborough International Airshow.
Canada Comes Into The Fold, But Anyone Else?
The most significant development for GCAP was the long‑anticipated announcement that the existing partners—the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan—will now include Canada, albeit in an observer capacity.
Observer status entails no financial obligation from Canada but provides Ottawa with a working understanding of the program and opens the door to future talks about full partnership, which would include industrial involvement.
“From the program’s inception, the partner nations have emphasized their openness to such a possibility, contingent on what best serves the initiative and offers mutual advantage,” said Masami Oka, CEO of the GCAP Agency, which represents the three governments, just before the Canadian announcement.
After the breakdown of the Franco‑German‑Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) amid significant industry disagreements between Airbus and Dassault, there is speculation that those nations—or at least some of their industrial stakeholders—might shift to GCAP. (FCAS continues to pursue next‑generation aerial technologies, albeit not a lead fighter aircraft.)
Regarding national participation, Leonardo CEO Lorenzo Mariani indicated he could envision benefits if Germany joined, yet cautioned that any major shift could create disruption.
He described Germany as a “strong industrial partner,” but warned that adding another nation and associated industries could introduce delays, stressing that the program remains on track for a 2035 service entry.
Mariani believes France will not join GCAP for the same reasons that caused the Franco‑German rift in the former FCAS effort—disagreements over intellectual‑property rights, work‑share arrangements, and design requirements.
German officials have indicated they are evaluating a variety of options post‑FCAS collapse, potentially including a role in GCAP.
From an industrial perspective, a senior Airbus executive said the company is exploring a possible GCAP role, though the entry criteria could be stringent.
“Is Airbus prepared to join GCAP?” Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, told reporters in London on Tuesday. “My answer is: it depends. We are ready to participate where we have a substantial share of the work and leadership, and that option is currently under review.”
Program Costs Still (Mostly) Under Wraps
During a Monday GCAP panel, senior executives indicated that it is premature to disclose full program costs, as the partners are still in the concept phase.
“We expect to have a precise cost figure by the end of the concept assessment phase, though we already have a clear projection,” said Marco Zoff, CEO of Edgewing, the consortium comprising BAE Systems, Italy’s Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (JAIEC).
Zoff added that the program’s cost structure will remain competitive because industrial activities are not duplicated.
In June, the United Kingdom pledged £8.6 billion ($11.5 billion) for GCAP over four years. This was shortly followed by a joint £4.6 billion investment from the three partner nations to fund the concept and assessment phase. Those funds build on a £686 million design and engineering contract awarded in April.
Canada is not expected to contribute financially at this time, as its observer status does not obligate any funding.
Turning to broader industrial issues, Zoff noted that no location for final assembly has been decided yet, adding that the decision must be made within the next few months.
“GCAP’s architecture is built on a technology roadmap and a work‑share model that balances the three participating nations,” Zoff explained. “Our goal is a roughly one‑third‑each split while maintaining flexibility to leverage each partner’s strengths.”
The GCAP Power and Propulsion System consortium, which includes Avio Aero (Italy), IHI Corporation (Japan), and Rolls‑Royce (UK), reported progress toward final approval of a new center‑line engine demonstrator, with component manufacturing continuing.
A Wingman Reveal
GCAP is not envisioned as a solitary platform; it will operate alongside a suite of autonomous drone wingmen.
A prime candidate is the Brontanax, a Combat Collaborative Aircraft (CCA) demonstrator built by BAE Systems and slated for its first flight in 2027. BAE unveiled the aircraft at Farnborough as its answer to the Royal Air Force’s Storm Fighter drone‑wingman initiative.
Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth, the United Kingdom’s Chief of the Air Staff, described the Brontanax launch as a “historic moment” that aligns with the RAF’s broader ambition to become Europe’s first sixth‑generation air force.
Primarily intended to partner with Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, the platform is expected to take part in NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise later this year, reinforcing Britain’s strategy to establish a family of loyal wingmen that will integrate with GCAP.
Building A Bridge To Sixth-Gen Capability
In preparation for the future GCAP, BAE Systems is targeting an early‑2028 first flight of its UK Combat Air Flying Demonstrator, a senior executive said.
The crewed, supersonic demonstrator is designed as a “bridge” linking the Eurofighter Typhoon’s fourth‑generation technology to full sixth‑generation capability, said Tony Godbold, BAE Systems’ FCAS delivery director, during the Farnborough air show. (BAE’s FCAS office is unrelated to the now‑defunct multinational program.)
The demonstrator’s development is intended to de‑risk key technologies for GCAP; production is advanced, with flight testing slated to validate stealth characteristics, handling qualities, propulsion, and airflow early in the program.
Godbold reported that roughly 90 percent of the demonstrator’s components—about 11,500 parts—are at various stages of manufacture.
“Major aircraft units—including the front, center, and rear fuselage, wings, and fins—have been under production for more than 18 months,” he added.
Final assembly is set to begin within weeks, with a year‑end goal of moving the front, center, and rear fuselage from Samlesbury to Warton, the Eurofighter production site.
Subsequently, systems integration, flight‑clearance activities, and efforts toward a military airworthiness certificate will be undertaken.
“The exact initial test points for the first flight are still being finalized, but our primary focus will be on exercising many of the sixth‑generation attributes—size, shape, handling, propulsion integration, and complex airflow management,” Godbold said.
He continued, “We will prioritize the aircraft’s handling characteristics, propulsion integration, and ensuring efficient airflow through a highly complex ducting system, which is crucial for low‑observable performance.”
Although Italy and Japan are not directly involved in the demonstrator’s development, both GCAP partners will have access to its data through the Edgewing consortium, Godbold clarified.
“The effort aims to enhance UK industry readiness through learning,” Godbold explained, adding that “a controlled data‑release process is already underway to enable information sharing with our GCAP partners.”
He declined to specify the demonstrator’s flight duration but confirmed that it would be used to support and validate future GCAP fighter test points.
The demonstrator is supported by a £2 billion investment tied to the United Kingdom’s broader combat‑air strategy.
