PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Policy Board has formalized regulations for establishing the Special Combat Unit (SCU), a specialized strike force tasked with conducting precision intelligence-based counterterrorism operations across the province.
Comprising 400 highly vetted personnel selected from elite police ranks, the unit will undergo intensive medical, psychological, and physical evaluations. Members will be reallocated away from standard policing assignments to focus on SCU-derived tactical operations, as outlined in an official statement released by KP Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed’s office.
The force’s operational framework aligns with global best practices, organizing troops into specialized companies of 45 personnel. Deployments will prioritize the most volatile districts, with detachments stationed in high-risk areas for 90-day rotations under daily command of district police officers or CTD unit leads. After tours, personnel will return for compulsory 30-day skills recalibration at the Elite Police Training Centre in Nowshera, where field insights will be integrated into force-wide doctrine.
IGP Hameed emphasized the SCU’s transformative role, describing the regulatory enforcement as a “historic milestone” bolstering counter-militancy capabilities. The unit will leverage cutting-edge capabilities including drone surveillance systems, sniper-grade weaponry, and advanced hand-to-hand combat protocols to neutralize threats. Public security and property protection remain central priorities.
