Kid Cudi Addresses Complex Dynamic with Kanye West During Chicago Performance

While Kanye West was stationed in Chicago for a brief two-night appearance, an unexpected advocate emerged from an old connection.

Early Saturday, Kid Cudi stood by his choice to perform alongside the Grammy‑winning Kanye West at Soldier Field, dismissing external criticism by noting that though he understood any fans’ frustrations, he did not feel compelled to reckon with expectations of disappointment if his audience disagreed. He reflected on first joining West’s GOOD Music label in 2008, describing those initial days as foundational to his own artistic evolution.

“That person is my brother. You certainly do not possess a bond like mine. We’re speaking almost two decades of creativity and siblinghood,” Cudi explained. “You simply are not family, and I accept that. Having worked side by side with Ye throughout more than twenty years of artistic partnership, his current actions feel unrecognizable compared to that earlier chapter—I understand why, yet I cannot reconcile what I once knew with who he has become.”

After hearing West issue a full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal, confirming his contrition regarding previous hateful comments, Cudi described feeling “done” with the producer, who also previously expressed harsh remarks concerning late designer Virgil Abloh.

“That interaction broke my heart because I truly loved Kanye,” Cudi admitted. “He was integral to my personal transformation and career trajectory. At one point, he was an extraordinary friend, but the man he has become is someone I struggle to recognize—or trust. I don’t belong within that reality, and that hurts deeply.”

With the new album *Donda* concluding its run, West proceeds on the Ye Live Concert Tour earlier in April, with additional shows scheduled for October 24 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The artist has faced obstacles attempting entry into the United Kingdom and France stemming from his earlier controversial remarks.
