SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised tests of a nuclear-capable cruise missile and other weapons aboard the newly repaired 5,000‑ton destroyer Kang Kon, which had been damaged during a failed launch ceremony last year, state media reported Sunday. The tests are part of Kim’s effort to develop a nuclear‑armed navy.
The Korean Central News Agency said the Friday event included firing a strategic cruise missile, operating the ship’s main gun and automatic cannons, and trialling its electronic‑warfare systems, target‑detection and information‑processing capabilities.
After observing the trials from shore, Kim ordered that the destroyer’s tests be completed and that the vessel be placed into active service within two months.
The drills follow North Korea’s late‑June commissioning of its first 5,000‑ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, which Kim highlighted in a ceremony announcing that the nuclear armament of his navy is proceeding as planned.
Having previously focused on ballistic‑missile development, Kim is now emphasizing naval power, including work on a nuclear‑powered submarine. At the February Workers’ Party congress, he outlined five‑year military goals that also call for intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of underwater launches.
The Choe Hyon, unveiled in April 2025, was presented by Kim as a major step toward extending the military’s operational reach and pre‑emptive strike capability. KCNA said the warship is equipped with anti‑aircraft and anti‑ship weapons, as well as nuclear‑capable ballistic and cruise missiles.
South Korean officials and experts suggest the vessel was likely built with Russian assistance amid deepening military ties, though some analysts question its effectiveness in active service.
The Kang Kon was revealed a month after the Choe Hyon in May 2025, but suffered damage during a botched launch at Chongjin, prompting a strong reaction from Kim. The ship was reportedly relaunched in June after repairs, but outside observers remain skeptical about its readiness.
Kim has also pledged to construct two new 5,000‑ton warships each year for the next five years, and to develop a larger 10,000‑ton destroyer.
