Kit Harington has officially been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the upcoming Harry Potter television series on HBO, stepping in after Nicholas Hoult departed due to scheduling conflicts.
Nicholas Hoult, known for his role in the X-Men franchise, was initially announced for the part earlier this month but was forced to withdraw as production commitments on other projects took priority.
Harington is widely recognized for his eight-season portrayal of Jon Snow in the critically acclaimed series Game of Thrones, and he currently stars in the BBC and HBO financial drama Industry. Interestingly, the actor previously lent his voice to Lockhart in an official Harry Potter audiobook, giving him an early connection to the character.
Speaking to Collider, Harington expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m a huge Potter fan. I’ve got to be honest, he’s one of my favorite characters. So, to be offered to play him is a real dream. I’ve had a taste of him in the audiobook and felt my way around him. He’s just a wonderful creation.”
The first season of the series, an adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day this year via HBO Max.
The second season will draw from J.K. Rowling’s second novel, The Chamber of Secrets, following Harry’s return to Hogwarts for another year of magical education and adventure.
Confirmation of the casting change was shared through the official Harry Potter Instagram account: “Before we begin year two at Hogwarts, there has been a slight change due to schedule: Kit Harington will be stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart.”
The new series features rising talent Dominic McLaughlin in the lead role of Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout portraying Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
Veteran actor and Oscar nominee John Lithgow has been tapped to play Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, while Nick Frost will take on the role of beloved gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
