Klopp has been serving as a commentator for German television coverage of the World Cup.

Despite ongoing speculation about a potential return to club management—most notably with Real Madrid in March—he categorically dismissed such links as ‘all nonsense’ during that period.

Under Klopp’s leadership at Liverpool, the team claimed seven major titles, including the 2019-20 Premier League championship and the 2019 UEFA Champions League trophy.

Prior to this, Klopp managed Borussia Dortmund for seven years between 2008 and 2015, securing two Bundesliga titles. He also spent seven years at Mainz 05, a club where he spent most of his career as a player.

Watzke, 69, who collaborated with Klopp during his Dortmund tenure as CEO from 2005 until his voluntary resignation last year, is believed to have played a crucial role in expediting the hiring process for Germany’s coaching vacancy.

Germany’s performance at this summer’s World Cup underperformances continued, as they were eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay on penalties.

Following Joachim Löw’s successful 2014 World Cup campaign, Germany struggled in subsequent tournaments: failing to advance past the group stage in 2018 and 2022 under Hansi Flick.

Nagelsmann took over from Flick in September 2023, initially signed for Euro 2024 (which Germany hosted). They reached the quarter-finals before a penalty shootout loss to Spain, the eventual tournament champions.

Nagelsmann’s contract was extended to the 2026 World Cup and then to Euro 2028, but he resigned after his second major tournament failure.
