Promising Results
Kodiak reported that both Zenkuda and KSI-501 achieved their primary objectives in a Phase 3 clinical trial involving patients suffering from wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a degenerative eye disorder characterized by abnormal blood vessel growth beneath the retina, leading to fluid leakage and potential vision impairment.
The performance of Zenkuda was especially noteworthy, demonstrating swift and sustained therapeutic benefits alongside an acceptable safety profile.
J. Pablo Velazquez-Martin, Kodiak’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasized that the findings align with the company’s objectives for Zenkuda, highlighting “rapid disease management in wet AMD and the possibility of six-month durability when applying strict treat-to-dryness re-treatment protocols.”
Regulatory Approval Could Lead to Market Entry
Following these outcomes, Kodiak plans to submit a Biologics License Application (BLA) for Zenkuda by the end of the year. The BLA represents a formal request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorize the commercial distribution of a biological therapy.
Victor Perlroth, Kodiak’s CEO, noted that the data supports the company’s progression toward the next phase of development as it prepares for the anticipated launch of Zenkuda as a potentially leading treatment option.
This development could tap into a substantial market opportunity. Worldwide sales of retinal medications are anticipated to surpass $32 billion by 2030, based on estimates from Strategic Market Research.
