Kohli Stresses Team Focus Following 15,000 ODI Run Milestone

Virat Kohli’s latest ODI milestone was accompanied by a match-winning performance, though the India captain made it clear that personal records remain secondary to his responsibility toward the team.

The 37-year-old became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs during India’s first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. Kohli then went on to produce a spectacular unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls, featuring 10 fours and nine sixes, as India chased down 296 in 41.4 overs. The innings also took Kohli’s tally to a record-extending 55 ODI centuries.

Kohli stated that his focus has never truly been on such milestones. Rather, it has been about understanding the situation and fulfilling his role for the team, with achievements naturally following.

Kohli expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue representing India, acknowledging the journey that brought him to this stage.

Kohli said he feels very grateful and blessed to be in this position, having played for so long. He emphasized keeping his head down, working hard, and thanking God for the opportunities that have brought him to where he is today.

Kohli also discussed his effort to adopt a more aggressive approach at this stage of his career, describing it as a challenge that has added another dimension to his game.

Kohli noted that staying mentally fresh and remaining present in the moment are priorities. He has focused on expressing himself freely and pushing his game forward, embracing the challenge of shifting up a gear or two, which he found exciting.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup approximately a year away, Kohli emphasized the importance of clarity and sustained physical intensity. India now holds a 1-0 series lead, with attention turning to the next match in Guwahati on Wednesday.
