Kyiv Students Return to School Amidst Air Raid Sirens and Missile Strikes

On Tuesday, balloons floated above a schoolyard in Kyiv’s Obolon district as children and parents gathered to mark the traditional start of the new school year.

The festive celebration came just hours after Russian ballistic missiles struck the Ukrainian capital overnight, leaving parents and pupils tired yet determined to proceed with the ceremony. Their morning was quickly interrupted, however, when an air raid alert sounded across the city. Families dispersed as distant explosions replaced the music and children’s laughter.

At Lyceum Obolon, principal Yevhen Poliakov had considered cancelling the event, aware that repeated alerts could disrupt the proceedings. Fortunately, the school is equipped with a shelter, allowing pupils to reach safety quickly.

As Ukraine enters its fifth school year since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the ceremony serves as a powerful symbol of resilience.
